Skin Corrosion

Skin Corrosion refers to the production of irreversible tissue damage in the skin following the application of a test substance. The major application for skin models is the classification of compounds according to their hazardous properties.

The OECD Test Guideline 431: "In Vitro Skin Corrosion Testing" describes all requirements for skin models to be suitable for reliable classification of substances in regards to their corrosive properties. Reference compounds, although very different in their physical and chemical properties, have to be classified correctly by use of the skin model to fulfil the requirements of the test guideline.

CellSystems® Epidermal Skin Test EST1000 is validated for the classification of compounds concerning skin corrosion according to the OECD test guideline 431 for the testing of chemicals: “In Vitro Skin Corrosion: Human Skin Model Test”. Extensive multicenter studies had proven the reproducibility and reliability of classification using EST1000.

The European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM) has published the ESAC statement on the scientific validity of EST1000 method for skin corrosion testing. It can be used for reliably predicting the corrosive potential of chemical substances; Click here to view the ESAC statement

CellSystems® offers the “Skin Corrosion Validation Kit” service to confirm interlaboratory reproducibility and to gain reliable results in your laboratory (see Validation Services).

CellSystems® laboratory facility is DIN ISO 9001:2008 certified for skin model production and testing services.
