Human Reconstructed Skin Models
Human reconstructed skin models have become increasingly important during the last few years in different fields. Reconstructed epidermis models already replace animal testing for skin corrosion and skin irritation testing. They are used for substance testing in the regulatory context of the cosmetics directive and under the REACH legislation. More complex skin models are established research tools for the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry as well as for academia. Especially in this area, the diversity of skin models and applications is rapidly growing. CellSystems® offers two different skin models and customized services.
EST1000 (Epidermal Skin Test 1000)
A three dimensional reconstructed human epidermis model. It consists of normal primary human epidermal keratinocytes. The cellular structure of EST1000 resembles that of the fully differentiated natural epidermis showing a base membrane, proliferating keratinocytes and a stratum corneum with an intact barrier function.
EST1000 is the ECVAM accepted epidermal model for regulatory toxicity testing.
AST2000 (Advanced Skin Test 2000)
A three dimensional full thickness skin model, consisting of reconstructed human epidermis with stratum corneum, an underlying dermis equivalent and a functional basal lamina. The organotypical coculture consists of normal primary human epidermal keratinocytes in differentiated epidermis and normal human fibroblasts in the dermis equivalent. AST2000 shows an excellent in vitro/in vivo comparison and allows a high reproducibility of results.
